St. Petersburg, with its canals, luxurious palaces and 4.5 million inhabitants, is currently Russia's second city in size and the most "European" of all Russian cities.

The city lies close to the Neva River, directly overlooking the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea, including in its urban area also some small islands, and is crossed by numerous canals with 600 approximately bridges connecting the various neighbourhoods to one another, which is why is has been nicknamed the "Venice of the North".

The great metropolis, built according to plans by famous Italian and European architects, has preserved until today the magnificent heritage of the tsarist period, becoming by full right part one of the most beautiful and important cities in the world, the capital of the North-western Federal District and of the Leningrad Oblast'.
